Choosing your first restraints

Restraints are where most people start, and the right first set is comfortable, quick to release and forgiving of mistakes.

Cuffs before rope

Padded leather or neoprene cuffs with a quick-release clip are safer for beginners than rope. They spread pressure, cannot tighten on their own, and come off in seconds.

Fit

Two fingers should slide between cuff and skin. Tingling, coldness or a change in colour means release immediately.

Look after the leather

Wipe with a damp cloth, let it dry away from heat and condition it a few times a year. Wipe metal hardware dry after use.
